It's iconic, it's British, it's a seafaring classic - Ronald Binge's Sailing By is everything light music should be.
This iconic British tune was composed in 1963 by Ronald Binge. It's one of his many recognisable melodies, including the popular Elizabethan Serenade composed 12 years earlier in 1951, for which he won an Ivor Novello Award.
Binge himself was one of Britain's foremost composers of what was known as 'Light' music, and perhaps unfairly maligned as such. Generally speaking, the genre was seen as not especially heavyweight, but thanks to a recent resurgence and a good dollop of nostalgia, composers like Binge are getting a little more attention these days. Pieces like Sailing By are proof that it's been worth celebrating again.
